The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States. Almost 200,000 people in the country are told they have lung cancer and about 136,000 people die from this disease each year according to the agency. To spread awareness of lung cancer and things people can do to lessen their chances of developing it, the month of November is recognized as Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
To prevent new cases of lung cancer, it has long been accepted that one of most important things most people can do is to not smoke. However, smoking and secondhand smoke are not the only risks. Lung cancer can also be the result of having a family history of it or being exposed to various substances, such as asbestos or radon, at home or work.
“Understanding what we are breathing in our homes, schools and work environments is important for our well-being,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “There are a number respiratory hazards that can be found indoors which could cause a variety of respiratory conditions, including cancer. There are also many known occupational carcinogens that may be present in dusts or fumes. These include substances such as asbestos, arsenic, benzene, cadmium, ethylene oxide, diesel exhaust, and some forms of silica and chromium.”
EMSL Analytical proudly supports the efforts of Lung Cancer Awareness Month and encourages people to learn more about airborne pollutants and respiratory health. To help in this process, EMSL’s laboratories provide an array of environmental and industrial hygiene testing services. They also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, air monitoring instruments and personal protective equipment (PPE). Several years ago, they even sponsored an educational video about Lung Cancer Awareness Month that can still be seen at:
