Denver, Colorado, September 25 2024
Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced it had reached a settlement with a Denver-area property owner and its associated companies to resolve alleged violations of the Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. The company has agreed to pay a $125,000 penalty to settle allegations that the firm conducted uncertified renovations at six multi-unit rental housing properties in and around Denver, Colorado.
The RRP Rule was created to protect the public from lead-based paint hazards that can occur during repair or remodeling in homes and child-occupied facilities, such as schools, that were built before 1978. It requires that individuals performing renovations be properly trained and certified, and must follow lead-safe work practices. It also requires building contractors that renovate pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities to be certified by EPA.
“EPA continues to pursue actions against companies for alleged RRP violations all across the nation,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “This settlement is a reminder to property management, renovation, and construction companies that lead-based paints can be a costly and serious exposure risk for workers and building occupants if the proper safety precautions are not taken. Fortunately, identifying lead hazards in homes and buildings is quick, convenient, and affordable. EMSL Analytical, with a lead testing laboratory in Denver, and dozens more across North America, provides environmental, industrial hygiene, and material testing services for lead, asbestos, and other regulated materials. We also offer sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and personal protective equipment. These resources protect workers, the public, and help to keep companies in regulatory compliance.”
