The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently released a new factsheet, What is Indoor Air Quality?, highlighting the sources that impact indoor environments and practical steps to improve the air people breathe indoors.
According to the EPA, indoor air quality (IAQ) describes the condition of air inside buildings and its effect on occupants’ health and comfort. With people spending an estimated 90% of their time indoors, the agency warns that indoor air can sometimes be several times more polluted than outdoor air. Poor IAQ has been linked to health concerns, reduced productivity, and higher maintenance and operational costs in buildings.
The factsheet identifies several key factors that influence indoor air, including:
- Everyday activities and occupant behavior
- Building materials, furnishings, and consumer products
- Gases from the ground, such as radon
- Indoor temperature, humidity, and moisture levels
- Performance of building systems like HVAC and plumbing
- Outdoor air infiltration
- A building’s size, design, and age
To address these concerns, the EPA recommends three core strategies to improve IAQ:
- Source Control – Eliminate or reduce pollutants at their origin.
- Ventilation – Increase fresh air circulation to dilute and remove contaminants.
- Filtration and Air Cleaning – Use quality filters and air cleaners to capture airborne pollutants.
“There are many factors that can impact the quality of air inside homes and buildings,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Fortunately, testing and monitoring can detect a wide range of issues from mold, bacteria, asbestos, and lead, to radon, chemicals, particulate matter, odors, and even temperature and humidity.”
To support these efforts, EMSL Analytical offers comprehensive laboratory testing services, along with sampling supplies, test kits, inspection tools, monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment. The company has also sponsored an educational video about the EPA’s new factsheet, available at:
