A Connecticut State Police firing range has reopened following months of closure due to lead exposure concerns, according to recent media reports. The facility was reportedly shut down originally after several troopers were found to have elevated blood lead levels.
Upgrades have since been made to reduce exposure risks, including measures to better protect instructors and officers from airborne lead dust. Elevated lead levels can pose serious health risks, making these improvements critical to workplace safety.
“There are thousands of non-military outdoor shooting ranges nationwide that could be posing risks to people that use these facilities or for those that work there,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Lead from bullets and shot, along with dust created when firearms are discharged, can contaminate the environment. Inhalation or ingestion of lead particles is a serious concern for range staff and visitors, with risks often even higher at indoor facilities without proper ventilation or cleaning practices.”
To support shooting ranges and other facilities, EMSL Analytical provides comprehensive laboratory testing services to detect lead and other heavy metals. These services include industrial hygiene and environmental testing for both indoor and outdoor environments, clearance testing following remediation, as well as access to sampling supplies, easy-to-use test kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
EMSL previously sponsored an educational video highlighting lead exposure risks at firing ranges, which remains available online: https://youtu.be/OmjzmbbPxk0
