Title Protecting Vision from Invisible Airborne Hazards
Introduction EMSL Analytical offers industrial hygiene laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, air monitoring instruments, and personal protective equipment to safeguard workers and building occupants from threats to their health and vision.

Cinnaminson, New Jersey, September 10, 2026

Airborne hazards are often invisible, yet their effects can be serious and long-lasting. From flying debris and dust to chemical vapors, fumes, and biological contaminants, these threats can irritate, injure, or permanently damage the eyes.

Eyes are uniquely vulnerable because they are continuously exposed and lack the protective outer layer that shields other parts of the body. Even brief exposure can cause symptoms ranging from mild irritation and redness to severe burns, infections, or long-term vision impairment.

Understanding what’s in the air is the first step in reducing risk. Industrial hygienists evaluate workplaces, identify airborne hazards, and assess exposure levels, helping organizations implement effective, site-specific control measures.

Air testing is another essential component. By collecting and analyzing samples, professionals can detect harmful substances that may not be immediately visible, enabling informed decisions about ventilation, containment, and safety protocols.

Education and training are also critical, ensuring workers recognize risks, follow safe practices, and respond appropriately in the event of exposure. Personal protective equipment provides a vital final layer of defense. Properly selected and consistently worn eye protection can prevent harmful particles and chemicals from contacting the eyes. PPE must fit correctly, be well maintained, and be used consistently to be effective.

“Preventing eye injuries from airborne hazards requires a proactive, comprehensive strategy,” said Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President of Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “By combining hazard assessment, air monitoring, education, and proper protective equipment, organizations can better safeguard health and vision. At EMSL Analytical, we support these efforts with laboratory testing services, sampling supplies, air monitoring instruments, and a wide range of PPE.”
